appoverloadWith seemingly limitless apps available for your iPhone, you could easily rack up a hefty App Store bill. If you prefer to keep life simple and cheap, stick with these free, easy-to-use apps that are handy for every communicator.

Fun

Words with Friends: Sharpen your vocabulary with the wildly popular and addictive, word building game.

Scrabble: Play up to 50 games at once against the computer or challenge your friends.

Social Media

Twitter: Get all the news and information you want in one spot. Find out what people are talking about by following trends. Great for generating story ideas!

LinkedIn: Make valuable connections, share industry news and search for jobs. Join groups and actively participate to get the most out of this app.

WordPress: Manage your blog posts, approve comments and track stats.

News / Books

USA Today: Gain access to all the USA Today content, not just select articles.

Time: Another news app that doesn’t limit content to subscribers.

Kindle: Perfect for reading books when you are waiting anywhere (doctor’s office, airport, restaurant).

Resources

Dropbox: Access all your Dropbox files on the go. This app lets you easily compile photos and documents to share with others.

Google: Search until your heart’s content.

Voice Memos: Leave yourself quick reminders.

Dictionary.com: Once downloaded, this app works offline so you don’t need an Internet connection to access the dictionary and thesaurus.

Notes: Use Notes for capturing story ideas, shopping lists, books you want to read and more.

Dragon Dictation: Go hands-free! Let your phone do the typing for you. But be patient. It takes a few times for the machine to learn your voice and its inflections.

  1. Thanks for the suggestions – this list is very affirming (I enjoy many of these free apps)!. I may prefer iBooks over the Kindle reader (for some reason, I like the iBooks annotation features better). Great post – very helpful!
